Curator Paul Makovsky:
“All the objects in the exhibition embrace the fundamental meaning of Scandinavian design—a focus on the essential elements of the work: beauty, simplicity, clean lines, an inspiration from nature and the northern climate, and sustainability. The strength and breadth of the work of these young designers is impressive. It ranges from blown-glass sculptures of trees by the Oslo-based studio StokkeAustad and Andreas Engesvik to Siv Lier’s Total Eclipse Lamp and the Display Away cabinet by Stine Aas.”
Norwegian designers and manufacturers are gaining international acclaim for their emphasis on innovation, as well as their deep commitment to creating solutions for social needs.
Our furniture industry was established on the country’s remote west coast, far away from industrial and consumer markets. This intimate connection to the natural landscape of mountains and fjords has served as an inspiration to Norwegian designers who, since the 1930’s, have been working alongside manufacturers to create beautiful and functional furniture and interior products.
